8 ways to speed up your computer

One of the common things I keep hearing on blogs and forums is my computer is slow, damn slow computer, please help my computer, etc.

So here are 8 simple ways you can use to speed up computer at no cost:
  1. Windows Settings for Performance, Optimize windows settings for performance over appearance, windows is generally set up by default for better appearance then performance, this can easily be change in the windows settings.
  2. Uninstall programs you don't use, certainly over time we keep installing different software on our computer that we stop using at a later time. These software keep cluttering the computer RAM, Hard drive and Registry slowing the computer. Uninstall these programs and that will surely make a difference to your computers performance.
  3. Remove unnecessary Start up Programs, nowadays all programs install themselves in the start up, these programs are loaded when windows starts up. If you have too many programs in the Windows start up then your computer will take really long to boot. Remove unnecessary start up programs and leave only those programs you want to load up during windows start up.
  4. Don't Clutter your Desktop, Nowadays its become a standard habit to put all information on the desktop, desktop is an active area and gets loaded onto the RAM. Hence if you are adding too many files to the desktop then you are loading these files to your RAM reducing the total amount of RAM available for applications thus slowing down your computer. Do not clutter your desktop, instead store your files in a folder in the hard drive and have a shortcut to that folder on your desktop.
  5. Leave adequate space on the C Drive, Windows uses the C Drive to store files temporarily, hence if the space is limited then it becomes a bottleneck to windows and windows will have to cut down the size of the data chunks to the amount of space available, hence reducing the overall bandwidth of the computer, hence always leave 4-5 GB space available on the C Drive
  6. Defragment your Hard Drive, Over time the computer hard drive gets very fragmented making the data access cycle to be much longer. This will slow down your computer. Defragment your hard drive to speed up your computer.
  7. Cleanup Registry, The registry is the windows database to store all information about the computer and the software applications on the computer. When starting or using any application windows needs to access the registry to get information about the application, hence if the registry is not in good shape this will slow the computer. Use a registry cleaning tool to clean up your registry and speed up the computer.
  8. Prevent and Remove Trojans, Spyware and Malware, these are malicious software designed to get into your computer through the internet, backdoors and security loopholes and transmit data from your computer to their respective server, slowing down your computer. Prevent these softwares from entering your computer using the windows firewall and in-case they are already there on your computer then use a spyware removal to clean the malware.
